Mediaeval and New Latin were based on Classical Latin, now a ‘dead’ language. The forms of Classical Latin were retained where they had died out in Vulgar Latin/Romance. However they were changed in their use. The ‘dead’ versions of Latin were used for specific purposes, such as religion, science, law, education.
