Should you min/max in DND?
D&D does not need to played at an optimized level to still be fun. Min/max-ing is neither good nor bad. It’s a play style. Like any play style it only works if the rest of your party (including the DM) is on board, not only with you playing that way, but also in the way you choose to scratch that itch.

It is pure power creep. Even if you’ve already accepted that characters are going to be much more powerful, the variant human is still overpowered, because it lets you take your best feat several levels before everyone else.
What class is best for human DND?
Artificer. Mark of Making makes Humans an optimal choice for Artificer. You just get so many tools early on and even later that makes Artificer a great option. If you have a Feat in mind, Variant human can do just as well!
