Life at sea meant short bursts of work followed by short periods of rest, these four-hour long segments of the day are called watches. Because a ship needs to be manned 24 hours a day, the crew are split into two or more teams or watches so that they can sleep and relax when not keeping watch.
During your time in the Navy, you will be required to stand many watches. Some watches will be of a security nature, such as a pier sentry or roving patrol; others will be operational, such as a telephone talker and/or status board operator. Whatever the type of watch, you must devote your full attention to it.

Can you email on a submarine?
You can actually send mail to someone on a submarine, it just might take a while to arrive. Letters have a better chance of making it than packages–they sometimes don’t get packages until after they’ve returned from deployment! They do receive mail when in port, and sometimes when they meet up with other ships at sea.
The First Watch was from 20:00 (8 p.m.) to midnight. The Middle Watch was from midnight to 04:00 (4 a.m.) The Morning Watch was from 04:00 (4 a.m.) to 08:00 (8 a.m.) The Forenoon Watch was from 08:00 (8 a.m.) to noon.

The general rule for the division of the two collections is World War II, with the Navy Department Library having the older biographies and the Operational Archives having the more recent biographies. However, there is considerable temporal overlap between the two collections.
