Can you use health insurance immediately?
In most cases, your health insurance coverage will not take effect immediately. There are general effective date rules that apply each year during open enrollment and during special enrollment periods triggered by qualifying events, which are addressed below.
How long does it take for new health insurance to work?
This applies when you enroll earlier than 15 days from the start of the next month. For example, if you buy health insurance up to November 15, your coverage will start on December 1. First day of the month following the month you enroll. If you enroll on the 16th or later, coverage begins in one-and-a-half months.
Does first 90 days include weekends?
Under the law, the 90 days are just that — 90 consecutive calendar days. That means weekends and holidays are swept up in the final count.
What is a benefit waiting period?
The waiting period is a block of time your employees have to wait before health coverage kicks in. It streamlines access to benefits by preventing your team from having to wait forever before receiving insurance.
Log into your Marketplace account. Choose your application under “Your Existing Applications.” Click the blue button “Pay Your First Health Insurance Monthly Premium.” If online payment is available, choose the green button “Pay for Health Plan Now” to go to your insurance company’s website to pay.
What do I do if I’m having issues with my insurance?
If you’re still having issues, contact the Marketplace Call Center. Your plan will send you a membership package with enrollment materials and a health insurance card as proof of your insurance.
What happens when I enroll in a health insurance plan?
Once you enroll in a plan, you’ll pay your premiums directly to the insurance company — not to the Health Insurance Marketplace®. Your coverage won’t start until you pay your first premium. Make sure you continue to pay your monthly premiums to your health insurance company on time. If you don’t, the insurance company could end your coverage.
