- Pneumonia.
- Aspiration (inhalation of stomach contents into the lungs)
- Inhalation of toxic substances.
- Bruising of the lungs caused by chest trauma.
- Near-drowning.
- Fat embolism (when a clot of fat enters the pulmonary circulation)
- Lung transplantation.
What is the most common cause of death in ARDS?
Sepsis syndrome with multiple organ failure remains the most common cause of death (30 to 50\%), while respiratory failure causes a small percentage (13 to 19\%) of deaths.
What occurs first in ARDS?
In the early stages of ARDS, fluid from the smallest blood vessels in the lungs starts to leak into the alveoli—the tiny air sacs where oxygen exchange takes place. The lungs become smaller and stiffer and it becomes hard to breath. The amount of oxygen in the blood falls.

How Is ARDS Treated? There is no cure for ARDS at this time. Treatment focuses on supporting the patient while the lungs heal. The goal of supportive care is getting enough oxygen into the blood and delivered to your body to prevent damage and removing the injury that caused ARDS to develop.

How long does someone typically stay on a ventilator? Some people may need to be on a ventilator for a few hours, while others may require one, two, or three weeks. If a person needs to be on a ventilator for a longer period of time, a tracheostomy may be required.

- Seek prompt medical assistance for any trauma, infection, or illness.
- Stop smoking cigarettes, and stay away from secondhand smoke.

- Get your flu vaccine annually and pneumonia vaccine every five years.
Can you survive ARDS without a ventilator?
This tube can easily be removed once the patient is free of the need for a ventilator. It is important to note that most people survive ARDS. They will not require oxygen on a long-term basis and will regain most of their lung function.
