Is it safe to keep the pilot light on?

Generally speaking, it is safe to leave your continuous pilot light on at all times, assuming it stays lit (more on this in a moment). While it does cost more to keep your pilot light on in between uses, it can actually have some benefits to your system.

Is a safety pilot required?

The FAA holds that the Safety Pilot is a required crewmember because FAR 91.109 requires one. So, you need at least a current Class III to act as Safety Pilot. An instrument rating is not required if the flight will be conducted under VFR.
