How are musical notes defined?
In music, a note is a symbol denoting a musical sound. In English usage, a note is also the sound itself. Notes can represent the pitch and duration of a sound in musical notation. A note can also represent a pitch class.

How are musical notes related to each other?
Any note that is twice the frequency of another note is one octave higher. Notes that are one octave apart are so closely related to each other that musicians give them the same name. A note that is one (or more) octaves higher or lower than an “F sharp” will also be an “F sharp”.
Why do musical instruments that play the same note sound different?
The reason the same musical note sounds different when played on various instruments is because the harmonic overtones and envelope of each instrument is unique. When a frequency is played, other frequencies, called harmonics, are created. Each instrument has a unique harmonic character.
