Can an ammo box explode?
Ammunition that is stored in the boxes sold by the manufacturer is not dangerous in a fire. If ignited by intense heat, the brass or plastic cartridge will burst. However, if ammunition is stored in a metal container such as a GI . 50 caliber ammo box, the ammunition can explode under the right conditions.

How do you store your 22LR ammo?
Keep my 22lr bulk stuff in a Maxwell House coffee container, the blue one with the handle. Everything else is in original boxes in an ammo box. It’s a whole lot easier to grab a box and go than grab a handful and juggle. SMALL BOXES for pistol ammo. A regular 50 cal can will easily hold 2k rds of 9mm. But it weighs a ton!
Why should you keep your ammo in its original boxes?
This helps avoid confusion on just what caliber, load, and vintage the ammo is at a glance. Sure, factory headstamps can be deciphered and should be verified before you load a firearm or magazine, but keeping rounds in their original boxes helps keep you ahead of the curve.
How do you dispose of your ammo?
Freedom isn’t free. If the ammo is in paper/cardboard boxes it comes out of the box and then goes into plastic ziplock bags which then go into airtight containers. I try not to get oils/salts from my hands on the rounds so as to decrease the potential for corrosion.
