Their academics were simply outstanding. Each year about five to ten per cent of the class at Harvard, Stanford etc is admitted based upon academics alone. ECs are not relevant to that group. So yes you probably can get into MIT on academics alone but they need to be very special.

Yes. I am answering from India and almost every international student going to MIT from India is there because he/she has an Olympiad medal. People like Diptarka Hait, Arindam Bhattacharya, Jeet mahopatra, Prafulla Dhariwal are all at MIT just because they were extraordinarily talented in science and proved this in the international Olympiads.
