If you can already play songs hands together it’ll take you about 4 months to get good at playing piano by ear. If you’re a complete beginner and you’ve never played a song hands together before, it’ll take you about 6 months because you’ll need to learn some other skills first.

Far better to put the money towards more sheet music or activities. Grades 1, 3, 5 and 8 is a fairly sensible amount, perhaps only 5 and 8 for some pupils. I think it depends on the child. I took practically all the grades, but I have always had excellent sightreading skills so it’s not like we only ever played the exam pieces.
