Costume is what the actors wear when performing. Costume can denote character, historical era and the style of the production, eg naturalistic or abstract . Therefore, costume often indicates the social status of a character.
How do storytellers deal with an audience who dislikes their characters?
Most storytellers encourage emotional investment in characters, and then they write their stories under the assumption that the audience will be delighted when the main character succeeds and disappointed when they fail. But an audience who dislikes the main character may not have that reaction.
Is it true that some audiences don’t like certain stories?
Yes, because any audience will generally like some things more than others. But the same goes for every aspect of storytelling. People also don’t like tangential exposition dumps or head hopping. Understanding how people respond to stories and creating the experience we want for them is what storytelling is about.

Other important protagonists, particularly viewpoint characters, should also be likable. Villains are more flexible. In a written work, they can be either loved or hated. However, it’s better when the storyteller is on the same page as their audience.

If you have a strong impression of a character, especially if you haven’t seen that character depicted on stage, you probably remember one line or bit of dialogue that really captures who that character is. Playwrights often distinguish their characters with idiosyncratic or at least individualized manners of speaking.
