Students enrolled in grades 6-8 are eligible to participate in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series. Students taking middle school mathematics classes who are not full‑time students in grades 6-8 are not eligible.
How does MATHCOUNTS competition work?
The standard Mathcounts competition contains four rounds: Sprint, Target, Team, and Countdown. At some state competitions, the top four contestants, determined by the Countdown Round, participate in the Masters Round. Some state and regional competitions add extra rounds, such as the Ciphering round.

How long is the Mathcounts team round?
Team Round Students have 20 minutes to complete 10 math problems, assuming the use of a calculator. Only the 4 students on a school’s team can take this round officially.
What is a good MATHCOUNTS score?
Team score A team’s score is equal the average of the sum of its members’ individual scores plus twice the number of questions answered correctly on the team round. With the individual scores of a maximum of 46 each and team-round scores a maximum of 20, a perfect team score is 66.

Countdown Round officially determines your final placement. Well, Mathcounts is a middle-school math competition, so there surely will be no awards for solving open problems. Even the International Math Olympiad (IMO) doesn’t give open problems! About scholarship money and awards. I believe that the awards are (as of 2011, when I participated)
What is the value of math contests?

How much does it cost to register for Mathcounts?
Register Now for 2021-2022! Early Bird Rates for the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series continue through Nov. 12 ($30 per competitor for schools). Schools and non-school groups can register for free for the National Math Club and Math Video Challenge.
