What does a Mudlogger do?
Mud loggers are field specialists who monitor the oil well and collect samples for the geologist. They oversee the collection, processing, handling, and analysis of samples collected from wells. They examine, describe, and record samples following industry standards and customer’s requirements.
What is mud logging in drilling?
Mud logging is the creation of a detailed record (well log) of a borehole by examining the cuttings of rock brought to the surface by the circulating drilling medium (most commonly drilling mud). Mud logging is usually performed by a third-party mud logging company.
What does a sample catcher do?
JOB DESCRIPTION: Sample Catchers ensure efficiency, safety and cost control by providing the Client Company with a detailed analytical record of the geology, oil and gas shows, drilling and mud parameters, and related problems encountered during drilling and completion.
What are the three main tracks in a Mudlog?
Layout of a mudlog
- Log headings.
- Track 1: Rate of Penetration (ROP)
- Track 2: cuttings lithology.
- Track 3: depth annotation.
- Tracks 4 and 5: hydrocarbon evaluation.
- Track 6: geological and lithological evaluation.
What is mud logging in oil and gas?
Mud logging is the creation of a detailed record (well log) of a borehole by examining the cuttings of rock brought to the surface by the circulating drilling medium (most commonly drilling mud). In hydrocarbon exploration, hydrocarbon surface gas detectors record the level of natural gas brought up in the mud.
Where do mud loggers work?
Usually, loggers work at the drill site in a small portable office – similar in size to an RV – retrieving drill samples, analyzing them, and recording the resulting data. Mudloggers are expected to evaluate lithology samples and hydrocarbon “shows”. They monitor rig activity and “downhole” conditions.
How is mud logging done?
Mud logging is done in a mobile laboratory at the wellsite while the well is drilled. The operator with the equipment at his command does the following: Detects gas in the drilling mud continuously and in the cuttings intermittently. Detects oil in drilling mud and cuttings samples intermittently.
What is sample catching?
[′kach·iŋ ‚sam·pəl] (petroleum engineering) During drilling operations, a sample of a cutting obtained from the drilling fluid as it emerges from the well bore or the bailer of a cable tool.
What does a mud engineer do?
A mud engineer (correctly called a Drilling Fluids Engineer, but most often referred to as the “Mud Man”) works on an oil well or gas well drilling rig, and is responsible for ensuring the properties of the drilling fluid, also known as drilling mud, are within designed specifications.
What is open hole logging?
Open-hole logging refers to logging operations that are performed on a well before the wellbore has been cased and cemented. In other words, the logging is done through the bare rock sides of the formation.
What is wireline logging?
Wireline logging is the process of using electric instruments to continuously measure the properties of a formation, in order to make decisions about drilling and production operations.
What does a mudlogger do?
Usually, loggers work at the drill site in a small portable office – similar in size to an RV – retrieving drill samples, analyzing them, and recording the resulting data. Mudloggers are expected to evaluate lithology samples and hydrocarbon “shows”. They monitor rig activity and “downhole” conditions.
What does a mudlogging technician do?
Mudlogging technicians are responsible for determining hydrocarbon positions with respect do depth, identifying downhole lithology, monitoring natural gas entering the drilling mud stream and drawing well logs for the purposes of oil company geologists.
How is gas gas extracted from mud?
Gas is separated from the mud, and a suction line siphons the gas to the mud logging unit for analysis. Cuttings are sampled at the shaker screen and examined inside the unit.
How often should a mudlogger complete data reports?
Most companies require mudloggers to complete and forward data reports on a daily basis, and perhaps even a couple of times per day depending on the drill site or drilling company. As with all operations and job functions on a drilling rig, safety is paramount.
