What is the most accurate type of rifling?
Button-rifled barrels can be extremely accurate; more bench-rest records are held by shooters using guns with button-rifled barrels than by any other type. Button-rifled barrels are very common on modern centerfire and rimfire guns.
What is 5R groove?
5R is a 5-groove rifling pattern with sloped or angled sides to the lands. The 5-groove type of rifling comes from the belief an odd number of grooves is also less stressful to the bullet because it doesn’t have two lands directly across from one another.
Who invented 5R rifling?
less than 10 years ago, “5R Rifled” barrels were introduced, and the gun world changed!!! The advent of 5R Rifling can be credited to Barrett “Boots” Obermeyer. “Boots” was a U.S. Army veteran who cut his teeth in the target shooting community over the years.
How many grooves are in rifling?
The number of lands and grooves may vary from one to 20 or more, depending on the preferences of the barrelmaker/customer. Most common are four, six or eight lands and grooves. Barrels with more than eight lands and grooves are sometimes called “multigroove” or “microgroove” types.
What makes a cold hammer forged barrel better?
Cold hammer forging produces accurate and durable barrels. A cold hammer forged barrel has smoother barrel surfaces compared to other barrel manufacturing methods such as button rifling and cut rifling. This guarantees consistent high quality and precision: every Tikka barrel is Second to None.
What is Remington 5R?
Built off the legendary 700 action, the Remington 700 5-R sets the benchmark for accuracy and durability. Much like M-24, the barrel is cold hammer forged and features 5-R rifling. The 5R rifling profile increases barrel life expectancy, accuracy and creates less fouling and bullet deformation over time.
It’s called “button rifling” because a button is used to push or be pulled through the bore to create the desired twist rate. Button rifled barrels are great because of their extreme accuracy from consistent bore and groove dimensions.
Can a bullet be over stabilized?
Over stabilization in bullets occurs when the barrel’s rate of spin exceeds the bullet’s aerodynamic need. In the most extreme cases, a very light bullet, driven to very high velocity, at an excessive rate of twist, will explode upon exit of the rifle barrel. That’s the extreme.

Does 5R rifling really make a rifle more accurate?
I am looking for a new hunting rifle, and one of the features I keep seeing advertised is 5R rifling where there are 5 lands and grooves instead of 4 or 6. Supposedly this makes the barrel more accurate because the lands oppose a groove instead of each other thus deforming the bullet less.
What type of rifling do you use in your barrel?
A lot of shooters use the 5R rifling like the M24 barrel’s have. It seems to be very popular. The M40 barrels use 6groove rifling. Is there any pro’s or con’s between them or is one better than the other at long distance?
How many lands and grooves does a gun rifling have?
“Conventional” rifling uses either 6 or 4 symmetrical lands and grooves on the bullet. Each of the lands (the raised portion of the rifling) are directly opposite one another. Likewise the grooves are opposite of one another.
Are 5 groove barrels better than 6 groove barrels?
Also, I have read that the bullet seals better in the barrel and with the design of the lands, the bullet has less deformation which end results makes it fly more consistently. Some say the 5 groove barrels clean easier than the 6. I can’t confirm this because I don’t clean often enough to tell a difference.
